How the Get-Paid-From-Abroad Decoder ranks payment paths
Compiled by the Cross Border Freelance editorial team. Last reviewed . [REVIEWED] — International employment / cross-border payments reviewer byline to be added after editorial review pass.
TL;DR
The tool scores 4 payment paths across 4 dimensions (cost fit, frequency fit, work type fit, scale fit) using your 5 answers, then ranks them highest-to-lowest. Affiliate commission is not an input. The ranking is informational — it does not determine the right path for your situation.
1. The 4 scoring dimensions
Each of the 4 payment paths receives a score from 0–100 based on 4 dimensions. The dimensions are weighted to reflect their relative importance in a typical cross-border freelance decision:
| Dimension | Max points | Input used |
|---|---|---|
| Cost fit | 30 | Monthly income band vs path's rough cost band |
| Frequency fit | 25 | Invoicing frequency (one-off / monthly / multi-per-month) |
| Work type fit | 25 | Work type (services / digital goods / physical goods) |
| Scale fit | 20 | Monthly income band (overhead justification at scale) |
Total maximum score: 100 points. Paths are ranked highest-to-lowest by total score. Ties are broken by the order paths appear in the data (stable sort).
2. Cost fit (0–30 points)
Cost fit measures how affordable a path's rough monthly cost is relative to your stated income. We use the midpoint of each income band as the reference income, then compare it to the path's maximum monthly cost:
| Cost / income ratio | Points awarded |
|---|---|
| Path max cost < 2% of income | 30 |
| Path max cost 2–5% of income | 20 |
| Path max cost 5–10% of income | 10 |
| Path max cost > 10% of income | 5 |
Income band midpoints used: under $2k → $1,000; $2k–$10k → $5,000; $10k–$50k → $25,000; over $50k → $75,000.
Cost bands are rough estimates from public pricing pages — see §6 for data sources. They are marked "seed" until verified against live pricing.
3. Frequency fit (0–25 points)
Frequency fit measures how well a path suits your invoicing pattern. Some paths (e.g. EOR) have high fixed monthly overhead that is hard to justify for one-off payments. Others (e.g. direct invoice) work equally well for any frequency.
| Path | One-off | Monthly | Multi/month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct invoice | 25 | 22 | 25 |
| Own entity | 15 | 20 | 20 |
| EOR | 8 | 18 | 12 |
| Local entity | 5 | 10 | 8 |
4. Work type fit (0–25 points)
Work type fit reflects how well each path suits the nature of what you are delivering. EOR is designed for employment relationships (services), not digital or physical goods sales. Physical goods typically require a local entity for customs and import compliance.
| Path | Services | Digital goods | Physical goods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct invoice | 25 | 25 | 12 |
| Own entity | 22 | 20 | 20 |
| EOR | 20 | 10 | 8 |
| Local entity | 15 | 8 | 25 |
5. Scale fit (0–20 points)
Scale fit measures whether the overhead of a path is justified at your income level. EOR and local entity have high fixed costs that are only proportionate at higher income levels. Direct invoice has low overhead that suits any scale.
| Path | <$2k/mo | $2k–$10k | $10k–$50k | >$50k |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct invoice | 20 | 20 | 18 | 16 |
| Own entity | 10 | 16 | 20 | 20 |
| EOR | 5 | 12 | 16 | 18 |
| Local entity | 2 | 6 | 10 | 20 |
6. Cost band data sources
The rough monthly cost bands shown on each card are seeded from publicly available pricing pages. They are marked "seed" — not yet verified against live pricing. Always check current fees on each provider's pricing page before making a decision.
| Path | Rough monthly cost | Sources (public pricing pages) |
|---|---|---|
| Direct invoice | $5–$60/mo | Wise Business pricing, Payoneer fees, Airwallex pricing |
| EOR | $299–$699/mo | Deel pricing, Remote pricing, Oyster pricing |
| Own entity | $50–$300/mo | Stripe Atlas, Firstbase pricing, Xolo pricing, Osome pricing |
| Local entity | $200–$1,500/mo | Estimated from local accountant market rates in US, UK, DE, SG. Highly variable — verify with a local accountant in the client's country. |
Data status: seed — seeded 2026-06-09. Not yet verified against live pricing. Last reviewed: .
7. Affiliate independence policy
Some result cards show affiliate links to relevant providers (payment platforms, EOR services, entity formation services). These links are a separate visual layer — they are rendered after the ranking is computed and do not affect card order.
Specifically:
- The
affiliateCategoryfield on each path is used only to decide which type of affiliate links to show (banking, EOR, or entity) — not to change the card's position. - Affiliate payout rates are not stored in the ranking code and are not read by the scoring functions.
- The affiliate links shown are geo-routed by your detected country — not by commission rate.
- Providers without affiliate programs (e.g. Western Union) appear in the ranking on their math alone.
- We always offer a "see all options" link so you can reach every provider regardless of your geo.
We may earn a commission if you open an account or engage a service through some links. This does not affect what we rank or how we rank it.
8. What this tool does not do
- Does not determine the right payment path for your situation.
- Does not calculate tax owed, filing obligations, or penalties.
- Does not determine whether you are a contractor or employee.
- Does not apply country-specific withholding tax rules or treaty provisions.
- Does not account for permanent establishment risk, CFC rules, or local substance requirements.
- Does not store your answers on our servers — all data stays in your browser's localStorage.
For tax treaty analysis, use the Double Tax Treaty Lookup tool (coming in Week 7). For residency determinations, use the Tax Residency Days Tracker. For path-specific decisions, consult a qualified international tax or employment specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Does this tool tell me which payment path to choose?
No. The tool ranks the 4 paths by how well they fit your stated income level, invoicing frequency, and work type. The ranking is informational — the decision is yours. Each path has legal, tax, and immigration implications that depend on your specific situation. Always confirm with a qualified specialist before changing how you get paid.
Does this tool calculate my taxes?
No. The tool does not calculate tax owed, determine your tax residency, or apply any country-specific tax rules. It shows rough cost bands for each payment path (platform fees, EOR fees, entity compliance costs) — not your personal tax liability.
Is the ranking influenced by affiliate commissions?
No. The ranking is computed purely from your answers: cost band fit, invoicing frequency fit, and work type fit. Affiliate commission is not an input to the ranking algorithm. Some cards show affiliate links to relevant providers — these are a separate visual element and do not change card order. The full scoring formula is documented on this methodology page.
What is an Employer of Record (EOR)?
An EOR is a company that becomes your legal employer in your country of residence, handling local payroll, taxes, and employment compliance on behalf of your actual client. The client pays the EOR, and the EOR pays you as an employee. EORs are typically used when a client requires an employment relationship rather than a contractor arrangement, or when the client cannot legally employ workers in your country directly.
How accurate are the cost bands?
The cost bands are rough estimates seeded from publicly available pricing pages (Wise Business, Payoneer, Airwallex for direct invoice; Deel, Remote, Oyster for EOR; Stripe Atlas, Firstbase, Xolo, Osome for own entity). They are marked as "seed" data — not yet verified against live pricing. Always check current fees on each provider's pricing page before making a decision. The data status is shown on each card.
What is the difference between "own entity" and "local entity"?
"Own entity" means you incorporate a company in a jurisdiction of your choice (e.g. Wyoming LLC, UK Ltd, Estonia OÜ) and invoice the client through that entity. "Local entity" means you register a company specifically in the client's country. Local entity is more complex and expensive, but simplifies the client's procurement and withholding obligations. It is typically only considered for large, long-term contracts.
Does contractor vs employee classification affect which path I should use?
Yes — but this tool does not make that determination. Whether you are classified as a contractor or employee depends on the facts of your engagement and the laws of both your country and the client's country. Misclassification can have significant legal and tax consequences. If there is any doubt, consult a qualified employment lawyer or tax specialist in both countries before proceeding.
How does the tool handle the "where you are based" and "where your client is" questions?
The country questions are collected for context and displayed on the result cards, but they are not currently used as direct scoring inputs in the ranking formula. The ranking is based on income band, invoicing frequency, and work type. Country context is shown so you can cross-reference the checklist items (e.g., withholding tax obligations, EOR coverage) against your specific situation.
Why does the tool show 4 paths even if some are clearly unsuitable?
The tool always shows all 4 paths, ranked by relevance score. Showing all paths — even lower-ranked ones — ensures you have the full picture. A path ranked 4th for your inputs might still be the right choice for reasons the tool cannot know (e.g., a client requirement, a specific tax treaty benefit, or a future scaling plan). The ranking is a starting point, not a final answer.
